Why Is My AC So Loud?

Why is my AC so loud? people ask us. Here in Texas, it is not a form of competition who has the loudest AC in the summer. With temperatures being so high, in Plano, Carrollton, and other cities we cover, it is not fun when your AC starts sounding funny.

Here are some noises you can hear:

  • Banging
  • Buzzing
  • Clanking
  • Clicking
  • Humming

Air conditioners are designed to stay fairly quiet and keep it under 55 decibels, but sometimes things start to get loud. Texas heat will make ACs go scream sometimes. So, why is my AC so loud? Let’s take a look at some of the reasons for ACs in Texas being loud and louder than your neighbors.

Banging

Reasons: detached part, internal blower

Broken or detached parts like a piston pin, a crankshaft, a connecting rod, or any number of other internal components that make up the internal compressor that has snapped or disconnected can start banging inside of your AC.

Buzzing

Reasons: air filter, loose parts, copper lines, debris blockage, condenser coil, internal fan blades, loose parts, imbalanced blower, a refrigerant leak

When the AC unit begins to buzz, it is very difficult to figure out what is the reason for it, especially here in Texas where bugs buzz all the time in the summer. A simple repair like changing an air filter could be a simple solution. Don’t forget loose parts inside the unit or the copper lines that run from the outside to the inside and vibrate off of that surface.

Clanking

Reasons: loose part

Clanking sounds, like clank-clank, may indicate an unbalanced or, again, loose part. The longer you let those loose parts dance inside your AC, the worse it can get.

Clicking

Reasons: failing thermostat, defective control, electrical issues

If the clicking is frequent or constant when you turn your AC on, electrical issues could be affecting the thermostat. So, click-click, bang-bang noise is not good. Give us a call.

Humming

Reasons: loose wiring, malfunctioning compressor

Humming is somewhat expected, and not unusual, but if it does not sound like your usual AC humming and it is more like a heavy metal band from the 80s, captured by the show Stranger Things, you may consider investigating it, or we can do it for you.
