Fire and Ice in Texas, Leaks and Smoke in A/C
Did you know?
One of the worst cold snaps to occur statewide occurred during the last half of December in 1983. Four stations recorded their longest continuous readings at or below 32 °F (0 °C) on record. Lubbock saw temperatures at or below freezing for 9 days (207 hours). The Dallas-Fort Worth airport measured temperatures at or below freezing for a total of 296 consecutive hours (12 days). Snow that fell on December 14 and 15 across northern Texas stayed on the ground until New Year’s Day of 1984.
While most A/C units are built to last, almost as long as your regular car, exposure to elements will affect the A/C. Two common issues mentioned by our customers are related to smoke and water, as indicators of fire and ice around the A/C unit.
Turn the A/C unit off when you see any water coming out of your A/C unit. If there is an issue, the flow of water may further damage the unit. Next, call a certified professional and we’ll take look. Dragon Air Services are available to you at any time, and our honest advice and experience can protect you from damages to the A/C unit.
The same works if you happen to smell a really bad odor coming out of your heater. In some cases it is possible that gas is coming in, so you must be safe and evacuate the house or apartment.
Reasons for HVAC issues
Now, if it’s not something dangerous, there are a few reasons that can trigger smoke and water in your HVAC units.
Old air filter
Easy fix. Don’t skip this step. The easy thing to do, is every 1, 3, or 6 months, depending on your unit.
Damaged drain pan
Being susceptible to rust, drain pain can show signs of deterioration, especially if you had the unit for a longer period of time.
Malfunctioning pump
The pump that takes exec water out of the house may break at some point. Extra water would be a good indication of it. In most cases, a simple examination of the unit can give you a good idea of what is happening.
Clogged drain line
It can happen. In most cases, it is possible to clean it up, instead of replacing all of it.
Low refrigerant
If the A/C unit is not cooling down as it should, this could be one of the reasons for the issue. And in most cases, it is an easy fix. Just give us a call.
The smoke coming out from your HVAC can be caused by a couple of things:
The motor may be going out or a piece of plastic melting. It could be as simple as a piece of plastic bag being caught inside the A/C unit.
The filter is too old. A simple thing to replace, but if not replaced, things stick to it, and eventually start to smell.
